How to catch redfish; tips and tricks from www.TheOnlineFisherman.com

how to catch redfish
Learning how to catch redfish is a fairly easy task. They are not a picky eating fish and will eat pretty much anything they find while rooting around for food. Dead-sticking cut bait is probably one of the more popular ways of catching redfish in Florida, but using live shrimp, live scaled sardines, or pretty much any kind of stinky plastic bait works. There are different types of structure where they hang out more than others, and that will be touched upon quickly in this article, but I suggest after reading this short article, you go and read how to catch redfish on The Online Fisherman (link provided below).

Redfish Fishing Techniques

Techniques for catching redfish are pretty similar year-round. They are found on grassy flats hanging close to potholes pretty much in any shallow saltwater in Florida. This makes redfish pretty easy to locate and catch. Look for mullet. Throw your bait directly in and/or around the mullet schools. Basically, they're kicking up crustaceans that redfish normally have to look around for, so this makes their eating a lot easier....which they like. Sometimes you'll find tons of redfish mixed in with the mullet, but other times only a few...or sometimes maybe none..

Places to Find Redfish

There are lots of places you can find redfish in shallow saltwater. Here are a few:
  • Grass flats
  • Mangrove shorelines
  • Residential docks
  • Estuaries
  • Rivers
Redfish live in shallow water most of their lives. They do go offshore to spawn, but quickly come back to live. Another common place for redfish to hang out is oyster bars. They feed on the crabs that hang out on the oyster bars. Just like most fish, redfish like a tidal movement. They tend to eat more when the tide is moving. If the water is stagnant, they will not be there, and if they are, they're not eating. How to catch fish under docks in Florida; snook, redfish, speckled-spotted sea trout

Fishing under residential docks in the wintertime is personally one of my favorite things to do. The excitement and the challenge to turn a snook or redfish so it doesn’t take you right into the pilings and break you off – is in my book –the best rush you can get fishing! This quick break down of an article called “Fishing Docks in the winter” in TheOnlineFisherman.com will definitely help you in your quest to find fish!

How to get your bait underneath docks effectively; skip cast

The most important thing you have to learn to do to be productive while dock fishing in the wintertime is to skip-cast. Most fish species that hang around docks are going to be way in the back warming up and waiting to ambush baitfish. Sometimes there will be some game fish around the edge, but most will be sitting way in the back. You will have to practice skipping your bait – just like you would skip-throw a rock – sometimes 3 or 4 times to get it where the fish are.

How to Position your Boat to Fish under Docks

Tides and current are a major factor in fishing under residential docks, but wind will also be a big factor. If there are 20 knot winds it will be difficult to keep your bait in the “zone” no matter what the current is doing, but if you position yourself with the wind at your back it will help out in a major way. Now if the current is going side to side you might try moving a little bit to the side, but not all the way because the wind will almost always override current. Now, go catch and fight fish!

How to pick the right fly fishing line

Picking the right fly fishing line is a skill in itself, just as picking the right fly fishing rod, picking the right fly fishing reel and picking the right fly for fly fishing all are. All these topics have been covered on this blog in the last few days.
Fly fishing line seems to remember its shape. People that have experience with fly fishing usually refer to this as “memory”. If your fly fishing rod has been in storage for a while; expect that you will have to break the line in a little before using it. The temperature the fly fishing line was stored in can also have a big effect on it. If it was stored in a garage in Alaska it will not unfold as good as if it was stored in a garage in Florida

Soft fly fishing line; saltwater or freshwater

Fly fishing line manufacturers make different lines that are built specifically for cold or warm weather as well as different fly fishing lines made for saltwater and freshwater. Soft fly fishing line will reduce memory but it will not eliminate it. Softer line will not work well if used in Florida. Harder line will not work well if used in Alaska. The only thing is: while trying to pick the right fly fishing line, the package will not say what type of weather it is fit for

How to get rid of 'memory' in your fly fishing line

You will want your fly fishing line straightened out after not being used for a long time. This is very easy and safe to do with your hands. Start by pulling out a few feet or so. Next, you’re going to grab both sides with your hands and manually stretch it out. Take out a few more feet and repeat. Simple.
